The project reconsiders the use of language and normativity rendered by institutions, such as through words ‘activation’ and ‘experience’, and explores possible alternatives unfolding beyond the implied socio-economic impact. A guided walk accompanies this process-led exploration during BLINDSIDE activation-residency period. part of Joy’s ongoing series of process-driven works grounded in active listening in public space. Joy considers the affective power of spaces, and their ability to direct our movement, interactions, and subjectivity. Using the West Space Window as an in-between space, we sit comfortably in silence together is an attempt to negotiate and re-contextualise the boundaries between the Window, gallery and office, blurring the line between (what, and who, is) 'inside' and 'outside'. This work stems from Joy’s experience as an emerging artist and weekly visitor to West Space as a volunteer (2022-present). Activated by spatial and sonic intervention, recorded on site over many months, Joy looks to subvert the assumed authority of the organisation, subtly transforming West Space from a space that presents to us, to an object itself, for us to perceive. Viewable during all open hours, with sonic activations Fridays, 3 → 6pm. "My practice is an accumulation of observations and interactions with people at different stages in their careers, from a range of backgrounds. I’ve been thinking about the idea of ‘success’, and asking myself, how do we want to position ourselves in the arts ecology? Participants are invited to bring in paper-based archival materials, and share a memory of when they pocketed a catalogue or room sheet from an exhibition. Why did you take that home? What is it doing now? These materials will be collectively metabolised through conversation and then composted onsite in a worm farm. In a series of digital installations, production materials are locally compiled, collectively consumed, edited and reused over time, much like organic materials in a compost heap. The work invites us to consider how we handle large amounts of digital content, what our metabolising processes are, and how nutrient-rich content can be produced using devices that are readily available (like your phone). ‘co-worm-ing’ is a working process rather than a fixed outcome. -This iteration of co-worm-ing is part of the Future Anterior exhibition at Blindside as part of PHOTO24 program, including works by Joseph Blair, Indra Liusuari, Autumn Royal, Emily Simek, Bixiao Zhang, Joy Zhou. reflecting on material communications in design practices and the politics in decision-making. Presented in the form of a map-making workshop at MPavilion, Mapping with Touch introduced audience to creating information through their bodily senses such as texture and touch.
