Borrow a Brick for Contact Listening

2024
public art

'Borrow a Brick for Contact Listening' activates moments and encounters around Abbotsford Convent created by artist Joy Zhou, collaborators Justine Walsh, Jessica Tanto, and Ceri Hann, and community. Through site-responsive installations and three days of short walking tours, this project presents collective dialogues that explores means of listening, as a disruptive force troubling prescribed norms and binaries in public spaces.

Audience are encouraged to go for a wander through the historic grounds, explore the architectural site of the Convent, and encounter sound scores planted across the Abbotsford Convent. With active listening in mind, this is an invitation to remain open to, and look for, overlooked voices and unexpected experiences.

Borrow a Brick for Contact Listening is the winner of 2024 Melbourne Fringe Best Words and Ideas (Best in the Category Award). This project is also nominated for Best Work By An Emerging Artist Award and Spirit of the Fringe Award.
This project received Cash to Create through the Fringe Fund.
